The process of developing a new South African smallscale
fishing policy
By Masifundise, 27 September 2007
The intention with the Round Table meeting on 3 October 2007, is to have an open discussion
among policy makers, researchers and other stakeholders about key components of traditional
smallscale
fisheries management and policy. Many lessons have been learned about traditional
smallscale
fisheries policy and management since the introduction of democracy, and the
knowledge and experience gained by stakeholders over the years is of great importance for the
future of the traditional smallscale
fishers. It is this knowledge and experience we hope will be
brought to the table on the 3rd of October, for the purpose of developing a new policy for the sector.
