Fishers fight for their rights

Over the past eight years artisanal and traditional fishers have undertaken a range of advocacy activities in order to fight for their rights. Since the introduction of the new long term policy the fishers have tried to engage President Thabo Mkeki and the Minister of Environmental Affairs on the impact of the long term policy but without success.

The fishers have tried to communicate with Minister van Schalkwyk, the parliamentary Portfolio Committee, department officials, the Provincial Government and even national parliamentarians but with little response.
